In the electronics world, Panasonic is known as the home of plasma. Originally the playground of a number of companies, plasma has narrowed to just a select few. Vizio, Pioneer and a host of others have all abandoned ship.
In their absence, Panasonic has picked up the slack and turned into a dominant force.
The company’s Viera high-definition television line includes LCD screens as well, but plasma is the star.

If you’re looking for a TV at the right time of year, there are bargains-a-plenty to be had. Because of the unpredictable nature of electronics releases, sometimes deals can be had year-round, if you know what you’re looking for.
The Panasonic Viera TH-58PZ800U is a 58-inch plasma-screen high-definition television. It’s technically a 2008 model — released in the fall to capitalize on holiday sales. Its replacement, the TC-P58V10, will be released in August with an upgraded screen and internals.

While many consumers are moving toward larger televisions, there’s still a home for smaller screens. Often used as a second television — or third, or fourth — smaller screens are inexpensive and capable.
For most companies, screen sizes below 32 inches are usually 26, 22 or 19. Some companies make all three. The 26-inch screen is probably the best option, because it’s wide enough to take advantage of high-definition signals, as well as being versatile enough to serve as the main television in a smaller house.

Most consumers looking for a large-screen television would do well to consider Samsung and its quality line of LCD models. Samsung has successfully merged desirable features with affordability, making widescreen HDTV accessible for almost anyone.
Those shopping at the lower end of the size spectrum should also give Samsung a look. In the 26-inch screen size, no-name and knock-off televisions are often cheaper. But they don’t have the technology — or, often, the warranty — features of name-brand models.
Samsung’s LN26B460 falls into the Series 4 line and retails for $529. It can be found for under $500 through many online and local retailers.

If you’ve ever messed around with the screen settings on an old cathode-ray television, you know there are are dozens of combinations of tint, sharpness and color saturation. A few wrong turns of the knobs, and it’s a chore to get it all back together.
The same is true of liquid-crystal display, or LCD TVs. But instead of knobs, there’s a vast web of menus, sub-menus and electronic codes. A few wrong clicks of the remote here, and your television may need professional help.
