One of the upsides of flat-panel televisions is the ability to be hung on a wall, eliminating bulky entertainment centers. But that same ease of placement is also a downside, because DVD players and other peripherals still need a place to live.

The Toshiba 22LV610U has that problem all worked out, though. Built into the case is a slot-loading DVD player. It adds an inch or two to the depth of the television, but that’s a minor price to pay for such convenience.

There is no shortage of options today when shopping for a LCD high-definition television. Solid choices are available from a half-dozen companies, each with its own selling point.

Sony has its name as the undisputed king of electronics, Samsung has the cache of a true innovator and Sharp pushes the advances made possible by its massive new factory in China.

Toshiba’s company tagline is “Leading Innovation,” and its Regza LCD flat-panel televisions are its flagship consumer products. While the company offers many different televisions, only a handful are tagged with the Regza name.

Now that 1080p high-definition resolution has been tackled on a large scale, flat-screen televisions with that feature can be found for hundreds less than even a year ago.

But the new battle for LCD television manufacturers appears to be refresh rate. Most source material is broadcast at 60 frames per second, which can sometimes create motion blur during fast action scenes. Mid-level televisions double the frames and refresh the on-screen image 120 times per second — or at a rate of 120Hz.

Like many retailers, Samsung has many different lines and models of flat-screen, high-definition television. As the price goes up so, too, do the features and price.

The top end of its plasma-screen line is Series 8, which features all of Samsung’s high-end technology. One step down in the plasma offerings is Series 6, which is less expensive but still packs the punch of Series 8.
