Much like when cathode-ray tube televisions were finally affordable for everybody, flat-panel televisions are starting to pop up in multiple locations around the house.

Kitchen? Sure. Bedroom? Even better! Bathroom? Guess so. They’re everywhere now.

While the 47-inch plasma in the family room gets chief television duties, there are plenty of places for a smaller set. The Samsung LN22B460 is one of those smaller sets. At 22 inches, it features high-definition at 720p and a $399.99 price tag. Online it can be found for about $70 less.

The LN22B460 is part of Samsung’s Series 4 line, which is both light on the budget and on special features. Series 4 TVs get standard amenities and not much more. One HDMI port, one composite input, one component input and a PC port.

If a TV really is only handling occasional-use duties like bedroom or bathroom or garage use, that won’t be much of a problem. But if it’s the main TV in, say, a dorm room or an apartment, more inputs will likely be needed.

The screen itself runs at 60Hz, meaning it refreshes the image on the screen 60 times per second. Most content is broadcast at 60 frames per second, so the LN22B460 should be able to handle most everything that comes its way.

It’s possible that some blur may occur during fast-paced action scenes, though. Many mid-to-upper-level televisions are running at 120Hz, and even 240Hz. Those speeds make it considerably less likely to see screen blur.

The LN22B460 also has a game mode, which darkens the blacks and pumps up the sound a bit. Additionally, the setting cranks up the image-processing response time, meaning you won’t see any lag on the screen after pushing controller buttons.

If there are nits to pick with the LN22B460, it’s the sound. With a 22-inch television, it’s likely it won’t be the centerpiece of a home theater setup. The included speakers will have to do the heavy lifting.

But according to customer reviews on Amazon.com, the built-in speakers aren’t capable of heavy lifting. Unfortunately, speakers like that are reasonably commonplace on HDTVs of this size. Cases are thin, with emphasis placed on the picture. Often, there’s not a lot of extra room to include a set of booming, high-quality speakers.

But for around $311, it’s foolish to expect too much. It’s a high-quality, high-definition television that does what it needs to do — bring television to the rest of the house, but in a smaller package. In that, the Samsung LN22B460 succeeds.
