Samsung’s Twin HDTV Threats

When shopping for a new high-definition television, it’s rarely as cut-and-dried as choosing one and walking out of the store. There are comparisons to be made, pros and cons to be weighed.

Ultimately, the one that goes home with you is the one that offers the most for the money.

Samsung has a pair of large-format LCD HDTV models that cost a lot of money, but also return a wealth of features. One is the LN52B750, a 52-inch model that retails for $1,929. The other is the LN55B650, a 55-inch model at $1,799.

The B750 model is from Samsung’s Series 7, which offers a few more features than Series 6, which includes the B650 model.

Both feature a flat panel with 1080p resolution and four HDMI inputs. From there, the differences begin. As a buyer, you’ll have to weigh the larger screen size of the B650 model against the higher price and more features of the smaller B750 model.

The LN52B750 has a panel that refreshes the image 240 times per second, known as 240Hz. The B650 has a 120Hz panel. Additionally, the B750 has a screen response time of 2 milliseconds against the 4 milliseconds of the B650.

The faster panel and response time means you’re much less likely to see image blur on the B750.

As far as connections go, the B750 has one more component video input than the B650 but lacks the wireless capabilities. The B750 is internet-ready, though; it just isn’t compatible with the Samsung wireless module.

The B750 has an advantage in internet functionality despite that. The InfoLink system, which delivers news, weather and personalized RSS feeds to the television, isn’t available on the B650.

The B650 is also lacking a key USB 2.0 function: the JPEG photo viewer. The feature allows the direct linking of a digital camera to allow large-format photo viewing on the television.

If none of the B650’s missing features are a big deal, go for it. The differences in response time and Hz aren’t usually noticeable by the average viewer.

But if you must be on the cutting edge with a faster panel and more connectivity options, the B750 will serve your needs just fine.

Like any big-ticket purchase, the key is choosing what works best for you. Depending upon your specific needs, either option from Samsung is a wise decision.
