LG LCD TVs — Life’s Good For LCD Buyers

The name is still somewhat foreign to consumers in the United States, but LG has been turning out quality, noteworthy products for more than 40 years.

LG Electronics, which is based in South Korea, was originally founded as GoldStar in 1958. The company produced electronics like radios and televisions, along with refrigerators, washer and dryers.

Today, LG is the largest plasma flat-panel television manufacturer, as well as a leader in LCD technology. The company’s LCD line — especially the 2009 models — has earned rave reviews in the technology press.

LG’s LCD range is topped by the LH90 series, which received and 8 out of 10 rating by CNet editors in July 2009. Each of the three models have 1080p resolution, a 240Hz panel for blur-free action and LED backlighting. By using LEDs instead of compact florescent lighting, the panel has a more accurate color range and uses less electricity.

The 55-inch model (55LH90) retails for $3,200, followed by the 47-inch model ($2,400) and 42-incher ($1,900). All of them are THX certified for superior picture quality.

The LH85 series uses wireless networking to clean up the inevitable mess of tangled cables. With televisions at 47 ($2,400) and 55 inches ($3,200), the LH85 has a small transmitter box that’s connected near your DVD or Blu-ray player, gaming system, cable/satellite box and home theater receiver.

The television can receive a 1080p, full-definition signal from up to 30 feet away. That means the panel can be mounted on the wall, or elsewhere, and everything else can be stuffed into a corner, out of the way.

Further down the line, the LH55 series includes the same 240Hz refreshing rate as the LH85 and LH90 televisions, as well as the 1080p resolution. The LH55 models have automatic picture settings as well, which brighten or dim the picture relative to the lighting in the room.

Screen sizes in the LH55 range are 37 inches ($1,400), 42 inches ($1,500) and 47 inches ($1,800).

The LH50 series includes two models — 42 inches and 47 inches. Both are 1080p resolution and have internet connectivity options. The 42-inch model, the LG42LG50,  is $1,400 and the 47-inch model is $1,700.

Farther down the line, the LH40 line is similar to the LH50 models, but without internet connectivity. Expect to find the LH40 models for a few hundred dollars less than the LH50s.
Budget-conscious models include the LF10, LF11, LH20, LH30 and LU55 series. All include screen sizes on the lower end — 42 inches and less — and a few have 1080p resolution. Expect to find them around $1,000 on the upper end and between $400 and $750 on the lower end.

For consumers looking for a high-end television with the technology of Sony or Samsung, but without the price tag, LG has long been a solid option.
