Samsung LN52B750 — An Upgrade For One Of The Best

Sitting near the top of Samsung’s LCD television range, the Series 7 line was already among the best in the industry.

Pricey, yes, but few manufacturers offered as much for the price — in both technology and picture quality.

With the release of a new batch of Series 7 televisions, Samsung has cranked out another fine blend of innovation and utility. Known as the “B” series, because the model numbers end in “B750” rather than the “A750” of previous generations, the new televisions add to an already strong feature set.

Pricing changed only a little, and the 52-inch model — the LN52B750 — remained the same at $2,899.99. Because it’s so new, prices from online retailers haven’t yet begun falling. Expect to get only a few hundred dollars off through the summer. (November 2009 update – price is now $1929).

Among the new features, the one making the most noise is the AutoMotion Plus 240Hz panel. To put it plainly, it allows for better playback of fast-paced scenes. Blur will be mostly eliminated in all but the most intense action.

The interactivity features have also been expanded in the LN52B750. Internet content through Yahoo was available on previous models, but more has been added this time around.

The “widgets” feature now includes Twitter, the microblogging site. So, in addition to looking at photos, checking stocks and finding the weather map, you can now let people know what you’re doing … while you’re watching TV.

While the connectivity of Samsung’s televisions has been praised, Cnet (www.cnet.com) wasn’t thrilled with the way the widgets work. Slow refresh times and lagging updates are hampering it for now, but it still does what it promises — more information to your television.

The LN52B750 has a preloaded content library, like the rest of Samsung’s high-end offerings. That library includes recipes, songs and games for children, photos and fitness workouts. It can be expanded by the user with content from Samsung’s website.

Behind the screen, the LN52B750 has four HDMI ports, along with a pair of component video inputs. Samsung’s trademark Touch of Color is barely noticeable in this model, adding just a hint of navy blue around the edges of the screen. Many previous models had a more pronounced reddish-brown frame.

At almost $3,000, the Samsung LN52B750 isn’t exactly a bargain. But it does offer up some of the best viewing options in the industry. And Samsung LCDs have always earned high marks. The question for consumers is whether more connectivity options is worth the hefty price tag.
