Samsung HL67A750 LED DLP HDTV – A Nice Catch

Samsung’s big 67-inch HDTV comes with little downside.

One of the biggest knocks on DLP (digital light processing) high-definition televisions has long been the cost of ownership. It’s traditionally not as simple as bringing home a TV and plugging it in.

While other flat-panel televisions — plasma and LCD — require no maintenance, many DLP televisions are projection-based, meaning they require a bulb to display images. Like the light bulbs in your home, DLP bulbs don’t last forever. Typical annual maintenance is around $150 for a traditional, bulb-powered DLP television.

Luckily for those looking to make the leap to HDTV, maintenance issues are disappearing with the spread of LED DLP televisions. Unlike bulb-based models, LED DLP TVs produce a brighter, longer-lasting light. LED (light emitting diode) technology also eliminates the annual rite of bulb replacement.

And because LED technology is inexpensive and dependable, it’s right at home in Samsung’s large screen DLP televisions. The 67-inch  HL67A750 model is a behemoth, and behind it all is an LED lighting system.

Along with Samsung’s CinemaPure Color Engine, LED helps create a 40 percent brighter picture with deep, vivid colors. The HL67A750 retails for $1,999.99, a price that rivals many smaller LCD-screen televisions.

Technical specifications for the HL67A750 are similar to other high-end offerings: 1080p resolution, 10,000:1 contrast ratio, three HDMI ports, a pair of composite video jacks and one S-video input. Picture-in-picture is included, as is a digital tuner.

An additional feature is Samsung’s built-in 3D capability. The television’s multiple processors allow it to layer and split images for 3D viewing. Yes, you’ll need the glasses.

Along with the price, the HL67A750 DLP TV has earned solid reviews from gamers, who praise the television’s razor-sharp picture. The large screen allows multiplayer screens to each have a large piece of real estate.

If there’s an area where the HL67A750 lacks, it’s sound quality from the built-in speakers. While there’s a good chance a 5.1 surround-sound system will be mated with a television of this size, not everybody goes that route. Built-in speaker sound has been described as “tinny,” “distant” and “underwhelming.” But you won’t be purchasing a TV for its sound quality — that’s what external speakers are for.

At 67 inches, with 1080p resolution, the HL67A750 shines as the hub of a home theater. High-definition sources — like Blu-Ray discs — can provide a movie theater-like experience from the comfort of your couch.
